Alexander & Elizabeth (Cubbage) Needels

Elizabeth (Cubbage) Needels

Elizabeth Cubbage (daughter of Thomas and Marry (Dill) Cubbage) was born Feb 15, 1802 in Kent Co., Del
Here I copy what she wrote in a memorandum she sent me 10 years ago.

"In my 17 year I set out for Heaven.  I have never felt like giving up the cause of Christ since I joined the church and truly I feel much indebted to grace for what the good Lord has done for unworthy me & mine & for that love I have so often enjoyed that casteth out all slavish fear and while I write I feel to pray God with all my heart for the Glorious hope I yet retain if I improve the grace already given.
I shall rest with Christ & be forever blest.  May we all so live as to meet in that happy land & take no more the parting hand.

"I thought I would write some for you to read when I lie silent in the grave & in a nobler sweeter song I will sing there is power to save.

"Nov 14, 1870.   47 years ago today you were born in Fairfield Co. Ohio and I am here in Morro Co Ohio and I want to be thankful that circumstances are as favorable with me as they are.  I have all I need to make me comfortable & your father is as kind to me as I could ask.  This is written with a feeling heart and trembling hand; and, if no more on earth we meet, oh may we meet in Heaven for there alone no sorrow is known.

"--Elizabeth Needels, your mother"

5ft 5in high, red hair, fair complexion, average wt 145 pounds, a Baptist until married, then a Methodist with free salvation as her song, yet living & well at my brother T.C. Needels', Bethany, Mo.
Her motto: Anything for an easy life and quiet one.
She never purposely hurt anyone and benevolent to almost a fault.  She died at the house of her daughter Mary J. Gilbert in the town of Albany in Gentry Co., Mo. March 16, 1884 in the full triumph of a living faith and taken by her son Thomas C. to Ohio, and buried by the side of her husband in Bloomfield Cemetery, Morrow Co., Ohio.

Alexander Needels

"Alexander Needels (son of George and Kezia (Jackson) Needels) born March 6, 1797 in Kent Co., Del.  Moved to Maryland, Allegany Co. the same year.  Moved again in 1803 to Fairfield Co., Oh, there raised to manhood.

"The red men of the forest with us for years.  I plowed before I learned my letters.  I often yet ponder over the goodness of God in those days and feel my heart swell with gratitude.

"March 3, 1821 in the woods alone, after a struggle of six months, God spoke peace to my poor heart & set me free.  O the joys of that happy night.  Yet ten thousand times has God blest me till I could see to read my title clear.  I feel as I pen this to say let all within me praise God.  Yet after all, well I know all is of grace; and, should I reach Heaven will have to sing a-sinner-saved-by-grace.  This for my firstborn son C.B. Needels this Nov 2., 1870."

The above is taken from the same memorandum as my mother's.

Alexander & Elizabeth (Cubbage) Needels

Alexander Needels (son of George & Kezia (Jackson) Needels) was born March 6, 1797 in Kent Co., Del in early morning.

Elizabeth, his wife (and daughter of Thomas and Mary (Dill) Cubbage) was born Feb 15, 1802 in Kent Co., Del.

Alexander Needels and Elizabeth Cubbage were married Dec 5, 1822 (Married by Rev. Charles Waddle at John Clymer's... after supper had a prayer meeting) by whom he had 8 children: 6 sons & 2 daughters.  One died at 17 months of age; the rest are living now (Dec 29, 1880), all having families & in fair circumstances.
He accumulated about $40,000, [or is that $40.000?] sent his children to school, gave them a good home, education, then sent them to Mo as they came of age (except the youngest daughter).
Made six trips to see them, taking his wife every time.  Served as Class Leader in the M.E. Church for 15 or 20 years.  Was Steward a longer time, gave liberally to support his church at hom & gave several hundred to help build churches in Mo.  Was an antislavery man and an anti Mason, although 3 of his sons & one son-in-law were Master Masons.  For several years him & his son G.W. ran the American Freeman in the interest of anti-Secrecy.  Before he gave his half interest in the concern to the [National] Christian Association opposed to Secret Societies.

A man of iron will, black hair, dark complexion, good constitution, 5ft 6in high weighing 140#, knowing no such thing as fail, a good farmer, a good judge of stock, a good judge of human nature, no sympathy for the lazy, ever pitying the ignorant poor & sympathizing with the working classes, he had many friends and several enemies.  After an active life of 81 years and 5 months with eye undimmed & judgement unimpaired he conversed with the family on Sunday morning as people were gathering for Church in the full triumph of a living faith he went to join the assembly of Saints on high.  Was buried in the cemetery in Bloomfield Township, Morrow Co., Ohio where his father, mother & several sisters are buried.
